Fairtrade Impacts

Thanks to Kiwis choosing All Good Fairtrade Bananas over the past 15 years, All Good has invested more than
$3.6 million into our grower communities in El Guabo, Ecuador, supporting crucial social and environmental initiatives.

Medical Center in El Guabo: Provides over 2,000 people with full health checks, dental exams, and blood tests annually. The centre employs two doctors and a nurse, offering emergency response and pharmaceutical support.

Free eye care: All growers and their families receive free eye exams and prescription glasses.

Specialised therapy: A rehabilitation centre in El Guabo provides therapy for 250 people, including stroke survivors and those with disabilities.

Free medical insurance: All growers and their families receive fully paid medical and social security insurance, ensuring they are protected in times of illness or injury.

COVID-19 support: Biosecurity measures and medical support were implemented during the pandemic to ensure the safety of growers and their families.

Support for women facing abuse: An institution in Machala, supported by All Good, provides assistance to women and girls facing physical and sexual abuse, offering them a safe space for help.

Empowerment through education: All Good supports women’s empowerment through education and work experience, fostering financial independence and family support, including backing women-led trade enterprises.

Promoting female leadership: With policies for pay equity and labor participation, 32% of farmers in the supply chain are now women, and more are stepping into leadership roles.

Supporting schools: Since 2010, All Good has supported 30 schools in El Guabo by building classrooms, providing computers, and ensuring clean drinking water for students. Safety measures, such as installing fences and gates, protect children near roads.

Annual school supplies: 1,260 school bags, along with books and stationery, are distributed each year to the children of growers and workers, supporting 1,200 children annually.

Playgrounds and infrastructure: All Good funds playgrounds, essential in rural Ecuador, where such facilities are often lacking. Clean water projects, like the one in Las Casitas, provide safe drinking water to schools and villages.

Elderly care: El Guabo has built a residential home for elderly members of the grower community, ensuring they receive proper care in their later years.

Community support: The organisation also provides Christmas bonuses and distributes 1,200 hampers annually to help growers celebrate the festive season.

Plastic recycling program: El Guabo’s recycling program prevents 8,000kg of plastic from entering landfills each year. Two collection centers store and recycle soft and hard plastics from banana plantations, which are repurposed into corner boards and boxes.

Bio-fermentation plant: El Guabo’s innovative plant uses organic fertilizers and microorganisms to reduce chemical use and promote healthier soils, helping control the Black Sigatoka virus while increasing productivity.

Water conservation: Farms have reduced their water usage through improved irrigation systems, drainage, and optimized water footprints, especially in packing stations.

Fusarium race 4 biosafety: The construction of concrete stakes and biosafety measures help 40 organic and conventional producers protect their crops from Fusarium Race 4, a serious banana disease.

Tree planting initiative: All Good and El Guabo have committed to planting 200,000 trees in the El Oro region of Ecuador, reducing erosion, protecting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change.

Climate footprint reduction: With a current climate footprint of 0.38kgCO2e/kg for organic and 0.46kgCO2e/kg regular Fairtrade bananas, All Good uses CarbonCloud’s international carbon benchmark to track all emissions throughout the supply chain. The climate footprints are displayed on the tape to allow consumers to make better-informed climate-conscious choices in store.

Reforestation projects: El Guabo’s reforestation programs along rivers help prevent erosion and protect local watersheds. Their commitment to sustainability goes beyond the plantations to benefit the wider community and environment.
